Welcome to my digital workbench. My name is Colin — I'm a carpenter and creative working, living, and playing in Michigan, USA.
I studied business, focusing on marketing and entrepreneurship, after graduating high school. All through university I worked trade jobs to put myself through school, and when I was 25 I realized those were the jobs that brought out my passion: working with my hands and solving problems. My need to create and my go-getter attitude made working on a job site seem far more exciting than working under fluorescent lighting, so I made the decision to pursue the trades full time.
I'm a fourth-generation carpenter. A dream of mine is to build a house for my wife to make a home, just as my father, his father, and my great-grandfather did for their families. My interest in business and design principles builds on what the men before me did.
While still early in my career, I've worked inside and outside residential homes all through Michigan — rental remodels, kitchen and bath, and a mixture of framing and finish work. I have a passion for historic restoration and renovation, and I obnoxiously share that they don't make them like they used to. I'm drawn to heritage American craftsmanship and American manufacturing — work built to last, and worth handing down. I'm proficient with power tools and small machinery. I think about a project from both sides: what it costs to build it right, and the value it adds when it's done.
Currently I hold a sales career that builds my confidence and provides insurance as I move my career forward. I've been able to use my collegiate education there — to build relationships in sales, and to help blue-collar businesses build their brand. As owner of Captains Carpentry LLC, I handle the whole job — meeting clients, estimating, scheduling, and then doing the work myself. And I'm building toward my own Michigan residential builder's license.
